Ahh nostalgia, is there really anything better? As we continue to wander down the weary path of the economy, the embrace for everything retro is growing stronger and stronger. Warm and fuzzy has jumped back on advertising radar, with modern commercials being filmed in black and white and pop-culture cues harkening back to the “good ole days”. But what’s interesting here is that nostalgia is not only embraced by those that grew up with something, but also those who are experiencing it for the first time.
We’re all well aware that the 1980’s are back in fashion, and Fashion Week has already given us a glimpse that couture is embracing its inner Nirvana and breaking into 90’s grunge. And as tribute sites and product redesigns roll out, like the revival of Rainbow Brite and the touch-based Rubik’s Touch Cube , blogs embracing nostalgia are on the rise.
The creators of “I Can Has Cheezburger” have unleashed Once Upon a Win, a site dedicated to all things awesome from your childhood. Their only rule is that it must be pre-2000, so it fits in with every level of Gen Y. The uploads are then categorized as different epic wins, everything from Halloween Doritos commercials to old Play Skool toys.
The real winner of the site is the connections people make to each of the posts in the comment sections. Some of them hearken back to childhood, or something their siblings did. All of them are links to simpler, better times. And the best thing about the notion of nostalgia is that nobody ever gets left behind with it. You can be in high school and miss the days when you didn’t have homework, just as someone misses not having an 8-5 everyday and two screaming kids at home.
The point here is that everybody wins with nostalgia, and everyone is affected on different levels. So embrace the past and even the present, because epic wins happen everyday.
